The Golem

March 22, 2017 Novel

The Golem is a novel written by Gustav Meyrink in 1914. The Golem by Meyrink is an unusually atmospheric book. It draws you into the world of illusions and precarious, like a dream, reality. During the whole small novel we follow on the heels of Athanasius Pernath, a craftsman making cameos for precious stones. However, the word “craftsman” does not reflect the true state of affairs. Pernath is a Master, an artist who delicately feels beauty and represents the world around him in his own way. We meet the main hero at a crossroads leading from a simple and monotonous life to a real storm of events and impressions. And the details of his past, as well as hints of the future waiting for Pernath, the author’s keeps in mysterious scenes and meaningful omissions. There are works that you read, cannot understand anything, but you cannot stop reading. The Golem is one of such books. I tried to find 5 reasons why a novel is worthy of a higher score. Plot. A lot of people heard about a strange man-made creature, the Golem. So, beginning to read the novel, I expected that Meyrink will just state his version of the...

Buddenbrooks

February 10, 2017 Novel

Happy ending, I really wanted them to be all right. The first generation, which we will meet personally, is Johann Buddenbrock and his wife Antoinette. They are a bit cynical, a bit strict, loving life and money. Johann made a fortune and turned the firm founded by his father into a well-run enterprise. He stood firmly on his feet, had unbreakable  principles and his life was happy and full of good moments. The second generation is Johann, son of the previous Johann, and his wife Betsey. They are milder, but much more obsessed by religion than their parents. Tense work for the family and for the firm (which is the same for all Buddenbrokes) is given for this Johann costs much greater effort and nerves. Johann often doubts the correctness of his actions, troubles, which are still not so many, drive him to the grave much earlier than his father. The third generation is Johann’s children – Thomas, Christian, Antony and Clara. Most of the narrative is about them, with them we will be “from the cradle to the grave”. Clara is a late child, kind of keeps to herself and strict, not knowing how to have fun, she will find joy only in religion. Christian is complete opposite of her,...

Demian

December 28, 2016 Growing-up novel, Novel

Demian is a philosophical novel, gloomy and mystical. We can consider it autobiographical as well – it is said in the foreword to the novel. It is a famous work, which had a huge impact on the writer’s further work, and the great Thomas Mann compared this book with The Sorrows of Young Werther. It is the story about a human being and how he is growing up and becoming a young man, who step by step moves farther away from the hypocritical norms of public morality and more and more reveals for himself his deep, dark personality. He is assisted by a mysterious friend of Demian – either the devil, or the mysterious deity, or just  the product of the imagination of the main character… In the book, in theory, there are two main characters, as well as those who appear only for a couple of chapters, but also plays an important role and makes some changes. But missing the fact that the narrative is conducted only from one of the main characters – my attention was definitely focused on the second one. In any case, the title of the novel is his name – Demian. Who is Demian? Who knows. From the first pages he is a mystery and the word...
